Loring Henderson, Founder

The Dare Center was founded by Loring Henderson, a amazing individual who dedicated his life and career to serving others. Graduating from the University of Kansas in 1961, he served in the U.S. Navy for six years before spending three decades in Washington D.C., contributing to various social and political organizations. After 30 years serving the community in DC, Loring's heart drew him back to Lawrence, Kansas, where he directed the Redemptorist Social Services Center in Kansas City and later collaborated with the Lawrence Community Shelter (LCS), transforming it to better serve the homeless. After retiring from LCS in 2014, he founded the Drop-In and Rest Center (DARE) in Lawrence, driven by his enduring commitment to addressing homelessness. Loring's legacy exemplifies an unwavering dedication to uplifting communities and addressing their most pressing challenges, establishing The Dare Center as a beacon of hope and support for those in need.
